Guide to battery maintenance
Batteries are one of the greatest costs relating to these machines, so it is important that the right batteries are used and properly maintained. Taking good care of your battery will help to extend its service life. For more information on servicing your batteries C L Floorcare Ltd will be happy to help.
Battery Testing
Battery testing should be performed whether a problem has occurred or not. Due to the increased electrical demands on the battery, little warning is given before it fails.
It is important that the battery is fully charged before testing a battery. Even a slightly discharged battery can give a false reading and deem the battery faulty when all that is required is a charge.
There are all different types of testing equipment available. A digital battery tester is the best option as they are safe, easy to use. Fixed and adjustable load testers, voltmeters, hydrometers and discharge testers can also be used, however correct training is required prior to using any of these testers to prevent personal injury or damage to the machine so if you need the help of a fully trained engineer please see our service page.
Battery Charging
When it comes to choosing the batteries and charger for your machine, it is important to select a charger that delivers the specified charging voltage and current to suit the battery type. Flooded, Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) and Gel battery types require different charging specifications to provide optimum performance and service life. manufacturers like Nilfisk & Karcher use different battery supliers so its very important to match batteries and chargers correctly.
Why do Batteries Fail?
Depending on by the application and the operating conditions. Batteries can fail due to various reasons, however the causes of failure fall under two categories: manufacturing and non-manufacturing faults.
- Manufacturing Faults-
Typically occur within the first 3 months.
- Non-Manufacturing Faults-
These fall outside of Century’s strict quality control systems and are likely to occur the longer the battery is in service. Often attributed to a problem with the vehicle’s electrical system, its operation or the battery application.
- Wear and Tear
battery ages, grid metal corrodes, and active material is lost from the plate. Over time this leads to a point where the battery will no longer be able to power the machine. High temperature will accelerate the degradation rates.
